History of white LED development (5): LED exceeds fluorescent light

The history of white LED development (1): the monopoly collapse, ushered in the history of white LED development in the era of competition (2): the battlefield from the court to the market white LED development history (3): the product with LED increases, the application scope expands the history of white LED development (4): Eliminate the threat in the bud

From 2005 to 2006, lighting fixtures using white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) became a reality. “Lighting fixtures made up of high-power white LEDs are not inferior to fluorescent lights” (Citizen Electronics). There are two reasons for the surge in confidence among LED manufacturers and lighting fixture manufacturers. A white LED with a luminous efficiency of more than 60 lm/W will come out, and the light utilization efficiency in actual use will exceed that of fluorescent lamps. Fluorescent lamps have a luminous efficiency of 80 lm/W to 100 lm/W. Although the value is high, there is a waste because the light is omnidirectional. The white LED is only irradiated to the front of the package. Therefore, when the light utilization efficiency is 60 lm/W to 70 lm/W, the actual efficiency is higher than that of the 100 lm/W fluorescent lamp (Toshiba Lighting Technology).

The second reason is that as the luminous efficiency increases, the luminous flux of each high-power white LED will exceed 60 lm. This allows the same amount of light as a fluorescent lamp to be obtained with fewer than 50 white LEDs. In this way, "the design flexibility of lighting fixtures will be greatly improved" (Lumileds Lighting Japan (at the time)). For example, LEDs can be easily embedded on a limited illuminated surface. As a result, manufacturers have begun to develop lighting fixtures that consume less power than fluorescent lamps, shapes, and installation sites.

1000 is reduced to 50

Previously, people have always believed that white LEDs "will become the light source of lighting fixtures in the future." But the reality is that white LEDs don't have enough power to destroy the market for lighting fixtures that are dominated by products with fluorescent lights. The reason for this is that since the luminous efficiency is low and the power consumption is large, the luminous flux that can be obtained from one LED is small, so the size of the lighting fixture is large.

Therefore, although white LED manufacturers are thinking about the market with a market size of 1 trillion yen, they have prioritized the development of low-power products for mobile phone backlights. For low-power white LEDs, products with a luminous efficiency of 50 lm/W in the second half of 2004 were introduced, but the use of such low-power products to achieve the same luminous flux as a single fluorescent lamp of 3000 lm requires about 1000 LEDs. Many lighting fixture manufacturers agree that "it is unrealistic to use it for general lighting fixtures." Although it is also possible to use a single high-power product with a luminous flux of 20 lm to 30 lm, the luminous efficiency is only 30 lm/W, which is only about 1/3 of that of a fluorescent lamp and about half of a low-power product, so that it consumes a large amount of electricity and requires Install a cooling unit to dissipate heat. Therefore, the previously developed white LED lighting, although it has a long life of tens of thousands of hours under certain lighting conditions, is very attractive, but can only be used in some special lighting fixtures on the market.

However, high-power white LEDs have quickly solved the previous problems by using technology accumulated in low-power products such as flip chip packages. Many viewpoints believe that "the luminous efficiency of 60lm/W will be a turning point. For lighting manufacturers, high-power white LEDs will quickly become easy-to-use products."

A white light-emitting diode (LED) with an input power of 1 W is proposed for lighting purposes, and the luminous efficiency will exceed 60 lm/W (a) from 2005 to 2006. When it reaches 60lm/W to 70lm/W, it can reduce the power consumption of lighting fixtures like a 100lm/W fluorescent lamp. Since the light use efficiency of the white LED for illumination starts to catch up with or exceeds the fluorescent lamp, the development pace of the white LED for illumination for the purpose of improving the color rendering index and reducing the cost is also accelerated (b). The lighting product is a technical pusher for white LEDs, and the positive cycle of white LEDs is about to begin. The technology accumulated in lighting applications can also be applied to low-power products such as LEDs for mobile phones.
