Protein G is a cell surface protein produced by Group C and Group G Streptococcus bacteria. While similar to Protein A, it exhibits distinct binding specificities. It exists in two forms: a 65 kDa variant (G148) and a 58 kDa variant (C40), both of which bind to the Fab and Fc regions of immunoglobulins. Naturally, Protein G also interacts with serum albumin, but since this can be a contaminant in antibody preparations, recombinant versions have been engineered to remove the albumin-binding sites.
