One layer is deposited directly into the micropores of the fiber, creating a new type of fiber.

"The biggest breakthrough for us is that we don't need to use the entire chip as part of the final product," said Pirsacio, a senior researcher at the Optoelectronics Research Center at the University of Southampton.
