Showa Denko expands quaternary LED production capacity by the end of 2008

Showa Denko uses quaternary LED lighting

Showa Denko announced that it will increase the production capacity of high-brightness quaternary LEDs from 100 million to 200 million at the end of 2008. The investment amount is 1.2 billion yen. The company's capacity improvement project at the Chichibu Plant, a high-bright quaternary LED production base, was completed in October 2007. Thanks to the project, the monthly production capacity has increased from 30 million to 100 million. However, the current production capacity may still be unable to meet the demand after 2008, so it decided to further increase production capacity.

The quaternary LED is an LED of a compound semiconductor using four elements of aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), indium (In), and phosphorus (P). Red, orange, yellow, and yellow-green LEDs can be made by adjusting the composition of the elements. In addition to being used in outdoor displays, Quaternary LEDs can be further developed for automotive taillights, interior lighting, flat panel TVs, and personal computer LCD backlights. Showa Denko said that the 4-yuan LED market is expected to grow at an annual rate of more than 30%.

The company is currently actively investing in gallium nitride (GaN) LEDs and high-brightness quaternary LEDs. The target is sales of high-brightness LED business in 2008 to 15 billion yen.
