Taiwan plans to invest 700 million Taiwan dollars to replace LED street lights in 2012

[High-tech LED News] Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Shi Yanxiang recently announced that the Taiwan government will invest 700 million Taiwan dollars (equivalent to about 23.25 million US dollars) to replace 53,000 existing street lamps.

The purpose of implementing this policy, Shi Yanxiang said that there are two reasons: First, LED is more energy efficient; Second, support local enterprises to make them internationally competitive. This policy will be implemented in January 2012.

Shi Yanxiang had previously talked with Taiwan's local LED leading companies, Everlight Electronics, Jingyuan Optoelectronics and Delta Electronics, on how to remedy the Taiwan LED industry. According to 2010 data, South Korea accounted for 24.1% of the global LED packaging industry and 19.1% of Taiwan. The Taiwan government is stepping up its efforts to enhance the competitiveness of local companies.
