According to people familiar with the matter, the British chip company ARM, a subsidiary of Softbank Group, has agreed to acquire the US-based data analysis company Treasure Data for $600 million. Since the transaction has not yet been made public, the informant requested to remain anonymous, and an ARM spokesperson declined to comment, and Treasure Data representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
This acquisition is part of ARM's entry into the Internet of Things. In June of this year, it acquired Stream Technologies, a Glasgow-based company that aims to improve the connection of Internet of Things devices.
SoftBank acquired ARM in Cambridge, England for US$32 billion in 2016. The company’s CEO Masayoshi Son said that the company is interested in investing in artificial intelligence, driverless cars, the Internet of Things, robotics and ride sharing. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, the company announced about $34 billion in transactions last year and invested in technology companies through its nearly $100 billion Vision Fund.
Treasure Data raised US$25 million at the end of 2016 and received support from investors including Sierra Ventures and SBB, while SBI is a former subsidiary of SoftBank.
Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Treasure Data's products are used in the automotive, retail, Internet of Things and entertainment industries to help companies analyze marketing and other data, such as processing the surge in data released by products or collecting information from sensors. The company said its customer data platform can help users compete with "data giants such as Netflix, Amazon and Facebook."
