Microsemi Announces LED Driver for LCD TVs

Microsemi Corporation announces the launch of the new revolutionary lossless LED backlight driver LX27901 for LCD TVs, which features a proprietary lossless architecture that significantly improves power efficiency while enhancing back-light performance and lowering overall Solution cost.

The LX27901 LED driver is the first component to provide LED drive capability for TVs with LCD Integrated Power Supply (LIPS) architecture. The LIPS architecture combines the TV's main power supply with LED drivers on a single printed circuit board for lower cost and higher efficiency. Microsemi said that the LX27901 continues the company's long-standing tradition of innovation in high-performance display lighting solutions, increasing power efficiency by 7% to 9%.

Key features of the LX27901 LED driver include three selectable drive modes, Microsemi's patented ACU_BRITETM algorithm for high accuracy, high efficiency dimming for a wide operating range, simultaneous adjustment to reduce the number of power conversion stages, and the use of Microssen Accurate current matching achieved by the unique lossless balancing technology. Other features include:

• 0.8A source/drain current drive capability • Built-in 5.25V regulator • Direct drive from up to 27V input voltage • User selectable dimming mode control • Robust protection for LED abnormal open and short circuit conditions • Compensate for external and internal PWM tuning Light operation • Dedicated fault indication • LED current and voltage monitoring • RoHS compliant, halogen free
As the efficiency requirements of government agencies become more stringent (such as the US Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Star 5.0 version), the energy efficiency of LCD TV applications becomes very important. Traditional solutions use 24VDC input and DC-DC regulators to boost and use a current source to control the current/brightness of each LED string. While this works, this multi-level architecture is extremely inefficient.

The LX27901 LED driver utilizes Microsemi's EcoBriteTM technology to integrate TV power and LED drivers in a single high-efficiency unit, eliminating the need for a DC-DC boost regulator. At the same time, EcoBrite features patented lossless LED string balancing technology that eliminates loss current sources. In addition, Microsemi's ACU_BRITE dimming technology provides lossless, high-accuracy dimming capability even at very low currents.

In addition, the LX27901 is available in a 16-pin plastic small integrated circuit (SOIC) surface mount package and is sampling now. The lead time for high volume products is 12 weeks.
