I just noticed something interesting while using Alipay today. It seems like the AR real red envelope feature is about to be shut down. I first heard about this from some posts online, specifically mentioning that Alipay plans to discontinue the AR real red envelope service starting July 22nd. Although I haven't seen any official announcements within my own Alipay app, there are already noticeable changes—during the Spring Festival, the map was filled with red envelopes, but now it's completely empty.
To give you a bit of background, this AR red envelope feature was introduced back in December 2016 with the 10.0 update. It combined augmented reality (AR) technology with GPS positioning and real-world elements, allowing users to scan their surroundings to find virtual red envelopes scattered around them. It became super popular during the 2017 Spring Festival, replacing the traditional "shake" feature with something much more interactive. At its peak, it was the talk of the town, with people running around trying to find these hidden treasures.
However, despite its initial success, the feature kind of faded into obscurity after the Spring Festival. While Alipay didn’t officially shut it down, it essentially stopped promoting it, and the entry point became increasingly harder to find. Over time, it just sort of fell by the wayside, becoming a novelty that no one really used anymore.
Now, with the upcoming shutdown, it feels like the end of an era. For those who loved hunting down these virtual red envelopes, it’s a bittersweet moment. Sure, it wasn’t something everyone used regularly, but it was definitely fun while it lasted. I guess it just goes to show how quickly trends can come and go in the digital world.
