Put green into the subway

Abstract: In 2008, the Hong Kong MTR and Jiuzhou Optoelectronics, together with the introduction of LEDs as the light source for subway cars and platform lights, have received wide attention. Today, Jiuzhou Optoelectronics LED car light source has undergone two years of actual testing, truly zero fault, zero light decay, and has been well received by the Hong Kong subway and the community. Recently, the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association awarded the Smart Environmental Procurement Award to the Hong Kong MTR, demonstrating its responsibility to the community and building Hong Kong's contribution to becoming a green city.

For the major cities in China that have suffered from traffic congestion, the subway has become more and more important as a fast and convenient means of transportation. The loss of subway is a common problem facing domestic development of rail transit. In some cities, the development of the subway has neglected economic benefits, and the subway has been in a state of loss for a long time, which will affect the sustainable and healthy development of the subway. In this regard, we should calculate the economic account, further innovate management and operation mode, and learn from the experience of the Hong Kong subway. As one of the few profitable subway companies in the world, the Hong Kong MTR has its own advanced concepts in its operation mode and procurement strategy.

Recently, the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association awarded the Smart Environmental Procurement Award to the Hong Kong MTR, demonstrating its responsibility to the community and building Hong Kong's contribution to becoming a green city. The Hong Kong MTR won this award, which is supported by many well-known companies. Jiuzhou Optoelectronics has become one of the biggest contributors because of its LED subway lighting solutions.

The energy consumption of subway operations is mainly concentrated in three aspects: traction locomotives, interior lighting, and air conditioning systems. At present, various technologies for traction locomotives and air-conditioning systems have matured, and various new technologies cannot be applied on a large scale in completed subways, contributing little to energy conservation. At present, the internal lighting of the subway can be further explored in the subway system. Natural light cannot be applied in the subway environment. The artificial light source must be used for 24 hours in the car, platform and passage. Therefore, the internal lighting system of the subway consumes even more energy than its air conditioning system.

Together with Jiuzhou Optoelectronics, the Hong Kong MTR has been the first to introduce LEDs as the light source for subway cars and platform lights in the world. In 2008, the first batch of LED subway car lighting sources in Hong Kong subway was installed.

Today, Jiuzhou Optoelectronics LED car light source has undergone two years of actual testing, truly zero fault, zero light decay, and has been well received by the Hong Kong subway and the community.

As the most savvy purchaser, the Hong Kong MTR uses the LED light source specially designed by Jiuzhou Optoelectronics for the subway. This light source is an optimized 28-watt LED light source. It is designed to replace the original two 36-watt fluorescent lamps in the car. One LED energy-saving lamp reaches 49 degrees per thousand hours of electricity saving. It lights up every day according to the six-year life cycle. In 20 hours, an LED energy-saving lamp will save 2,146 degrees and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2.36 tons.

Relevant persons of the Environmental Protection Promotion Association praised the LED lighting of the subway. The concept of green environmental protection is not only reflected in the energy saving: the long service life of Jiuzhou Optoelectronic LED lighting fixtures for 6 years not only reduces the frequency of subway cars. Maintenance reduces labor and material expenses during maintenance and improves vehicle attendance. More importantly, if a fluorescent tube is used, it needs to be replaced 6 times in 6 years. One LED lamp reduces the use of 12 fluorescent tubes, completely avoiding the environmental pollution of mercury in fluorescent lamps.

Together with the Hong Kong subway, Jiuzhou Optoelectronics not only applies LED lighting in large-scale subway cars, but also applies LED lighting to subway station lighting. Metro stations require a wide range of high-illumination lighting, which is the focus of metro energy conservation. At present, Jiuzhou Optoelectronics has completed the replacement project of Hong Kong Metro Rainbow Station, Hung Hom Station and other sites, and is preparing to start replacement work in more sites.

Environmental professionals are very appreciative of the environmental protection concept of the Hong Kong subway. In particular, low-carbon environmental protection is not intended to significantly increase the cost of production and operation of enterprises. Instead, it pays attention to the interests of enterprises while focusing on social and environmental responsibilities. New technologies can not only reduce environmental pollution, but also bring more profits to enterprises. At this point, the experience of the Hong Kong MTR is worth learning.

EDM (electrical discharge machining), is a manufacturing process used to obtain a specific desired shape in metal by applying electrical discharges(sparks),When it comes to using electrical discharge machining, the water serves as a key component. To get the best performance from an Edm Machine, the water must be kept as clean as possible. During the EDM process, some of the metal goes into the water as small particles. The water is filtered and deionized(demineralized) in order to remove those metal atoms. Deionized water helps to promote a higher metal removal rate and enhances the machine`s capacity to deliver a more precise cut. So the EDM water filter is very important component for EDM water filtration system.
