4G version of the iPhone lacks the need for chips to be launched in 2012

According to foreign media reports, Apple may launch the iPhone 5 at any time, but 4G mobile phones will not be released this year. According to rumors, Apple’s next-generation iPhone will not be available until September. Therefore, it can be inferred that the iPhone 5 will not be a 4G mobile phone.

This is because access to such fast networks, like Verizon's Thunderbolt phones, requires the use of chip sets that Apple chief operating officer Tim Cook said on Wednesday. In response to questions from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, Cook said that 4G chips that rely on LTE technology do not meet Apple's requirements.

He said: "The design of the first generation of LTE chips has made many compromises to meet the requirements of mobile phones. Some of these compromises are unwilling to accept them." In addition, Cook also declined to discuss the timetable for the release of the new iPhone. He said: "We never comment on unannounced products."

Will Strauss, president of wireless chip research firm Forward Concepts, believes that this chip will not be available until next year. When talking about Cook's remarks, he said: "They are right. There are no suitable chips. It is likely that they will not be in the fourth quarter of this year."

The Thunderbolt of Verizon, the only 4G phone on the US market, currently relies on a pair of chips. One of these is a Samsung chip that uses Verizon's 4G network for communications, allowing the phone to transmit data at 5-20 Mbps. Another chip, Qualcomm, uses Verizon's 3G network for calls.

Strauss believes that installing two kinds of chip solutions is necessary because Verizon's 4G network is not universal enough to support only 4G networks. The solution is: The next-generation chip must combine 4G and 3G technologies to support single-chip communications, allowing handset manufacturers to provide ultra-thin mobile phones and extend battery life.

Chip makers such as Qualcomm and Ericsson STMicroelectronics and Intel will not begin sampling samples of this chip until the end of this year. Strauss expects that these chips will not begin to appear in mobile phones until next year. Therefore, any 4G iPhone will not be earlier than this time.
