Global LED TV shipments grew 98% year-on-year in October

December 6th, according to the latest report from market research organization Displaybank, global LED-backlit LCD TV shipments exceeded 10 million units for the first time in October 2011, reaching 10.1 million units, up 3% from the previous quarter. It grew 98% in the same period last year.

Displaybank pointed out that the LED backlight module (BLU) is suitable for high-end products such as 3D or Smart TV, so the proportion of shipments continues to increase; plus the spread between LED and CCFL backlight modules gradually narrows, prompting the demand for LED TV Increase. Therefore, the ratio of LED BLU for LED TV was increased from 32% at the beginning of the year to 48% in October.

The overall LCD TV shipments stagnated at 15 million units in March this year, but it has increased dramatically since September and remained at the same level of 20.9 million units in October. Displaybank pointed out that the main reasons for this are the preparation for the previous National Day holiday in China, Black Friday in North America, and the end of year sales period, so demand has increased. In addition, Displaybank estimates that the total shipments of LCD TVs in 2011 will be approximately 203 million units.

In terms of brand performance, LCD TV shipments accounted for 22% of Samsung’s market share in October; LG Electronics ranked second with 13% market share followed by Sony and Toshiba. Accounted for 9% and 8%. On the other hand, shipments of global flat-panel TVs (including LCDs and PDPs) grew by 11% from the same period of last year to 26.67 million units, which also hit a record high for single-month shipments this year.
