Korean and Taiwanese manufacturers are working hard, AC LED drive market prospects are promising

Discussions and product development on AC LED (AC LED) technology are getting hotter and hotter on the market.

As we all know, DC-driven LED products hide many drawbacks. They need to be used with rectifiers, which have a lifetime of only 20,000 hours, but DC-driven LED products last as long as 50,000-100,000 hours. Therefore, the DC-driven LED product needs to be replaced many times in the "lifetime", and it is inconvenient to apply to a fixed lighting device.

In contrast, AC LEDs are a class of LED products that integrate various processing technologies. They include multiple devices or cores that can be directly driven by AC power from the AC grid without the need for additional transformers, rectifiers or drive circuits. This allows LED products to be directly applied to home and office AC electrical plugs (100-110 volts / 220-230 volts) without the need for converters, which not only significantly reduces the cost of the circuit, but also avoids the energy lost during the power conversion process.

Seoul Semiconductor, a Korean LED manufacturer, has been working on the development and promotion of AC LEDs for a long time. With the resurgence of LED lighting applications in the past two years, many Taiwanese manufacturers have also made efforts in this field to add another fire to AC LEDs.

Seoul Semiconductor launches "Acric he" early

Seoul Semiconductor in South Korea was the first semiconductor lighting company to develop this technology on a large scale. In November 2006, a semiconductor embedded light source device called "Acriche" was first introduced by Seoul Semiconductor. This LED can be directly connected to a 110V or 220V AC socket with a simple circuit, without the need for an AC converter.

Seoul Semiconductor has high hopes for this product. Du Yeal Kim, head of sales at Seoul Semi Conduct, once said that the LEDs are a "major breakthrough" for the lighting industry. "Our patented AC LED technology will expand the LED market to mobile phones or homes outside the computer and car sectors. And industrial lighting," Kim said. "Acriche may gradually replace existing LEDs."

The AC LED's dual-conduction mode avoids electrostatic discharge problems. In addition, to meet the needs, the chip size and the number of devices or cores can be customized, and the high-volume manufacturing process is also compatible with standard DC-driven LEDs. AC LEDs can be matched to systems that require high voltages of 110 to 220V, so AC LEDs can be used for general lighting, billboards, street lights and household appliances.

In November 2006, Seoul Semiconductor has been able to mass produce "Acriche" products with a source efficiency of up to 40 lumens per watt. In September 2007, Seoul Semiconductor increased the efficiency of the "Acriche" light source to 60 lumens per watt. In November 2007, “Acriche” acquired the “CE” and “TUV” safety certifications in Europe and developed a new technology of 80 lumens/watt that is comparable in efficiency and reliability to DC LEDs.

In February 2010, “Acriche” achieved high luminous efficiency of 100 lm/W and has already started mass production. At the same time, another product with a luminous efficiency of up to 150lm/W will be put into mass production before the end of this year. The Acriche will replace halogen, incandescent or fluorescent lamps on a larger scale.

It is reported that the four series of A4, A5, A6 and A7 newly launched by Seoul Semiconductor are improved on the basis of A1, A2 and A3. The new product adopts a small-sized design structure and has higher efficiency.

Taiwan manufacturers strengthen AC LED technology investment

Taiwanese manufacturers are struggling to defend the island's leading position in AC LED technology. So far, patent issues have hampered the development of the island's diode industry, stimulating them to find their own way in less-secured territory.

To promote this advancement in the industry, the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute has funded the establishment of the AC LED Application and Research Alliance to integrate the island's industrial resources. Almost all major LED manufacturers on the island are involved. They include chip makers: Jingyuan Optoelectronics, Dingyuan Optoelectronics, Yuyuan Optoelectronics, Fuhua Electronics and Lite-On Technology; packaging design companies: Bright Technology, Everlight Electronics, Hongqi Technology, Jintai Electronics and Qiqi Optoelectronics; System companies: China Electric, Xianrui Technology, Liqing Technology, Liquigleds, Zhen Mingli, Shin Chin (Xinjintie) and Xinxing and other companies.

To achieve differentiation, Taiwanese companies are developing a high-voltage (HV) LED that is similar in structure to the AC model but integrates a rectifier. The product features a single-chip design that is configured to reduce drive current and allows for wider distribution of the illuminating core for higher luminous efficiency. The monolithic structure also increases the wall plug eff iciency by 10%. It also reduces the required wire bonding, simplifies packaging, and lowers overall cost.

According to the introduction of Jingyuan Optoelectronics, at present, a white light AC LED chip with a luminous efficiency of 93 lm/W has been developed. The goal is to replace compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) with E12, E14, E26 and E27 diodes. But cost is the main challenge. The cost of an AC LED source is about five times higher than that of a CFL.

Manufacturers will focus on the mercury-free and dimmable advantages of AC LEDs and will use them first for the special application of “green” buildings and then for general-purpose lighting. The island's manufacturers are optimistic about the prospects in this area, as major manufacturers such as Philips and General Electric are already considering subcontracting their business.

Taiwan has a complete supply chain that meets this need. For example, Epistar provides chips for packaging companies such as Edison Optoelectronics, Everlight Electronics and Unity Opto. The three package manufacturers have also proposed their products to system integrators such as Delta Electronics to manufacture light bulbs.
