Bluetooth Technology Alliance Announces Open Gateway Architecture

Shanghai, China – February 16, 2016 – The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) has announced the opening of its Bluetooth gateway architecture and the introduction of a starter kit to help developers quickly create Internet gateways for Bluetooth products. With a Bluetooth gateway, Bluetooth-enabled sensors can connect to gateway devices via Bluetooth technology, passing data to the cloud and exchanging data. The new architecture extends the potential applications of the Internet of Things by enabling remote monitoring and control of fixed, Bluetooth-enabled sensors.

The new Bluetooth Internet Gateway Architecture and Starter Kit show developers, makers, and OEMs how to quickly and easily create connections between Bluetooth devices and the cloud without the need for a smartphone or tablet as an intermediary hub. This important communication function gives the control of the sensor to the human and the system, and is not affected by the distance, which lays the foundation for the next realization of the Internet of Things.

Mr. Steve Hegenderfer, Director of Bluetooth Technology Alliance Developer Program, said: "We understand the huge demand for gateway functionality in the market. This demand is not only from alliance members, but also from consumers. Consumers are eager to achieve an interconnection. Family, but the current function can not meet this demand. People hope to monitor the security system at home, whether at home or in the office. The Bluetooth Internet Gateway architecture provides all developers with the standard to create gateway functions. Home infrastructure, such as routers, thermostats, security systems, etc., can now communicate with small, low-power sensors and transmit relevant information to the cloud and can be monitored from anywhere."

This new gateway architecture will address the pressing needs of today's smart home developers who want to create hub devices to connect Bluetooth-enabled sensors in their homes or integrate gateway functionality into existing products.

Mr. Errett Kroeter, vice president of marketing for the Bluetooth technology alliance, said: “The most important value of the Internet of Things is to connect people and expand their horizons to achieve a better life through technology connectivity. The new Bluetooth gateway architecture enables The Internet of Things achieves these values. We extend the monitoring and control of Bluetooth-enabled sensor devices to the cloud and make data more accessible."

The Bluetooth Internet Gateway Smart Starter Kit is now available for download on the Bluetooth Technology Alliance official website Bluetooth.com.
