China's nuclear power market attracts leading global experts in application technology

On September 22, the Singapore Straits Times published an article titled "Nuclear Experts Head to China to Test Experimental Reactors." According to the report, scientists from the United States and other Western countries are struggling to secure enough funding to build experimental nuclear power plants domestically. As a result, China is emerging as a key testing ground for next-generation nuclear technologies that are safer and more cost-effective to develop.

This month, China Nuclear Power announced the establishment of a joint venture company to build and operate the "Tangbo Reactor," designed by Washington-based Tara Energy Co., which is led by Bill Gates. Earlier this year, Canada's Laning Group and the U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory also partnered with Chinese entities. The Canadian group signed an agreement to construct a new "cyclic fuel" nuclear plant in collaboration with China National Nuclear Corporation and Shanghai Electric Group. Meanwhile, the Oak Ridge lab is conducting joint research on molten salt reactor technology with Shanghai's Applied Physics Research Institute.

Industry experts note that China has become a preferred partner for international collaborations in advanced nuclear projects. Unlike many Western nations, where regulatory and financial hurdles often slow down innovation, China offers a more favorable environment for experimenting with new reactor designs.

While most developed economies are gradually shifting toward renewable energy sources like solar and wind, China's rapidly growing energy demand has led to massive investments in various types of new power plants. The country has the most aggressive reactor construction plan globally, aiming to increase its nuclear capacity to 58 gigawatts by 2020.

Dr. M.V. Ramana, a professor at the University of British Columbia, believes that the future of nuclear energy looks brighter in China than anywhere else in the world. MIT professor John Fossberg added, “China is the largest market when it comes to new power plant development. If we don’t act together, the low-carbon energy sector will be dominated by China.” ▲ (Author: Stephen Stapleshski, translated by Ding Yuqing)
