As the daughter of Wang Yongqing, known as the "father of business," HTC Chairman Wang Xuehong once said, "I belong to God, and I am very content." However, life is full of surprises. Recently, she faced an unexpected accident in Christendom.
According to reports from Taiwanese media, Wang Xuehong was deceived by church expatriates in the U.S., losing around $7.4 million (about 48 million yuan). She had donated this amount to the church of "The Fourth House of Christ." The money was reportedly misused by her husband Chen Wenqi's university classmates, Chang Ruwu and Li Weilin. Both were arrested on February 8th and released on bail of $200,000 each.
HTC has not officially responded to the fraud incident involving Wang Xuehong. Public discussion has been ongoing, with some netizens linking the scam to HTC’s current struggles.
According to HTC's latest financial report, in 2015, the company's total revenue reached NT$121.684 billion (approximately RMB 24.07 billion), a 35.2% drop compared to the previous year. In December alone, revenue fell to NT$6.516 billion (about 1.29 billion yuan), down 36.6% month-on-month and 57% year-on-year.
Analysts suggest that HTC's performance decline stems from fierce competition from Apple and Samsung in overseas markets. Additionally, its strategy in the Chinese market has never been satisfactory. Wang Xuehong’s insistence on focusing on the high-end segment led to a loss of direction for the company.
Wang Xuehong, who has long struggled with insomnia due to the pressure of being the daughter of a business legend, found solace in her faith. According to the "Apple Daily," although she wasn’t particularly religious as a child, her belief deepened after entering the tech industry. She began praying before bed, hoping for peaceful sleep, and often read the Bible again. One night, she felt a sense of divine presence, which strengthened her faith.
Her husband, Chen Wenqi, was also influenced by her and was baptized at "The Fourth House of Christ." The couple married there, creating a strong emotional bond with the church.
Since 1996, Wang Xuehong and Chen Wenqi have donated large sums to the church, including funds for the "Seminary Fund" and "Mainland China Mission Fund." The defendant, Chang Ruwu, a classmate of Chen Wenqi, was involved in misusing these donations. He registered a charity with a name similar to the Saratoga Church and secretly transferred the money to his own account. He served as an elder at the church from 2002 to 2011.
Wang Xuehong, trusting him completely, even appointed him as the general manager and CFO of VIA in the U.S. Using this trust, he fraudulently used the donations for the construction of a new church.
Growing up in a Christian family, Wang Xuehong was deeply influenced by her mother, Yang Jiao. Her mother, a devout Christian, played a key role in shaping her worldview. When HTC faced crises, Wang Xuehong always led the team in prayer, believing that everything should be done with faith and openness.
In 2013, during a difficult period, she held a family meeting where they debated whether to close the company or raise more capital. As a Christian family, they decided to pray together. After the prayer, her sister came out and said, "God said, keep going." This decision saved HTC.
Wang Xuehong's faith helped her stay positive even during major challenges, such as the patent war with Apple and the pressure from giants like Samsung and Intel. She often quoted the Bible, saying, "Forget the past, press on, and move forward toward the goal."
In 2011, HTC's stock price soared to NT$1,161, making it the "stock king" of Taiwan. But seven months later, it dropped to NT$406. Despite this, Wang Xuehong remained optimistic, believing in eternal life and the importance of contributing to others.
Even in tough times, she maintained a positive attitude, telling Tencent Technology, "I'm a Christian, a little optimistic and innocent, mostly because of my faith."
Her Christian beliefs deeply influence her leadership style. Employees often mention how she shares the Word of God with them, encouraging them to rely on faith in all aspects of their lives. Though hesitant to openly promote religion in the company, she keeps Bibles everywhere and leads by example.
Despite her faith, HTC's future in the Chinese market remains uncertain. With declining smartphone sales and increasing competition from domestic brands, the company's performance has not been satisfying. Its high-end strategy, which has repeatedly failed, has yet to be adjusted.
During the Christmas period last year, when asked about HTC's future, Wang Xuehong remained hopeful. She mentioned the company's VR products as a potential turnaround. While faith has guided her through many challenges, HTC's success now depends on more than just prayer.
