Korean media: China's artificial intelligence patents have tripled in the world's second five years

On August 6th, South Korean media highlighted a concerning development: the nation appears to be lagging behind global leaders like China and the U.S. in key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communication technology (ICT), which are expected to play pivotal roles in shaping the future of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This trend, according to some experts, could place South Korea at a significant disadvantage in the race for technological supremacy. If current patterns persist, South Korea may find it increasingly difficult to keep pace with more advanced economies in this critical domain. According to a report published on the website of South Korea's "Korean Daily" on July 31, Japan’s "Nikkei Asian Review," citing data from a consulting firm, noted that during the period from 2010 to 2014, South Korea filed only 1,533 AI-related patents, trailing far behind the United States (15,317), China (8,410), and even Japan (2,071). Over the previous five years, between 2005 and 2009, the number of AI patent applications from the U.S. had surged by 1.26 times, reaching 12,147. Meanwhile, China saw its AI patent filings triple during the same timeframe. This growth was partly driven by strong government support; the U.S. has been actively promoting both the foundational research and commercialization of AI under federal leadership, while China announced in May 2016 its intention to develop a national AI market valued at 100 billion yuan. Moreover, the report extends beyond AI to highlight South Korea’s broader challenges in the ICT sector. Data released by the Information and Communications Technology Promotion Agency earlier this year indicates that South Korea’s total ICT patents amounted to approximately 213,000 in 2015, significantly less than those of China (1.1 million), the U.S. (589,000), and Japan (319,000). This gap suggests that South Korea may face long-term difficulties in maintaining its competitive edge in cutting-edge technologies. Professor Zhang Bingzhuo of Seoul National University’s Department of Computer Engineering emphasized the urgent need for collective national effort in securing core technology patents. He remarked, “In fields like artificial intelligence and big data, where the barriers to entry are exceptionally high, it is essential for the entire nation to collaborate in securing these vital patents—not just relying on individual enterprises or companies.” This situation raises important questions about South Korea’s long-term strategy in the tech landscape. As global competitors continue to invest heavily in research and development, South Korea risks being left behind unless it adopts a more comprehensive approach to fostering innovation across industries.
