Farichild Semiconductor offers designers of mobile and handheld mobile products a device FAN3988 with highly integrated overvoltage protection (OVP) and USB/charger detection. The device is the latest addition to Fairchild's OVP product family, allowing end users to flexibly select external P-channel MOSFETs based on the specific on-resistance and current capabilities required for their application.

The FAN3988 features built-in auto-detection, which senses whether or not a USB charger is connected by continuously monitoring the D+ / D- line under short-circuit conditions. In addition, the device senses overvoltage or undervoltage conditions by monitoring VBUS. When the overvoltage threshold is reached, the FAN3988 immediately disables the external P-channel MOSFET. These features reduce design complexity and eliminate external circuitry, saving board space. This new OVP device is ideal for meeting the requirements of emerging overvoltage protection standards and is especially suitable for mobile phones.
FAN3988 is the newest member of Fairchild's charger front-end IC product line, which provides protection for lithium batteries to avoid charging circuit failure. Another member of the series, the FAN3989, has similar performance to the FAN3988 but has a built-in MOSFET. The FAN3988 is available in an ultra-compact 6-pin MicroPakTM MLP package and lead-free terminations. The moisture sensitivity meets the lead-free reflow requirements of IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020.
