Sony: Play in virtual reality is not "lonely"

In the context of the first large-scale PlayStation VR experience opening in Taiwan, Sony Computer Entertainment Taiwan made a special appearance on the first day of the Taipei International Video Game Players Day. The event featured Global Studio President Yoshida Shuiping and game producer and creative director Nicolas Doucet, who discussed future collaborations with PlayStation VR. They introduced the "Play Room VR" feature launched alongside the system, and later elaborated on how virtual reality technology is being integrated into game design. During the Tokyo Game Show last year, we had the chance to try "Play Room VR," a multiplayer game developed specifically for PlayStation VR by Sony. This game allows up to five players to join in. One player wears the PlayStation VR headset and experiences the game from a first-person perspective, while the other four use DUALSHOCK 4 controllers to play through the TV screen. Using VR doesn’t have to be isolating. In the three announced games—such as haunted house, cat and mouse, and monster attack—players can enjoy different experiences based on their character and perspective. These games demonstrate how PlayStation VR’s head-tracking features work alongside traditional split-screen gameplay. According to Nicolas Doucet, future PlayStation VR games will include six distinct gameplay styles. However, even though "Play Room VR" is designed for social interaction, the current PlayStation 4 hardware only supports one PlayStation VR unit at a time. This makes VR more of a personal immersive experience, which can sometimes make users feel disconnected from others using standard controllers. Yoshida Shuiping explained that while PlayStation VR is focused on individual immersion, it still allows for online interactions, such as in 3v3 competitions. For example, in "RIGS," VR players can check their teammates' status during waiting periods or view enemy data. Even in "Play Room VR," there are unique ways to interact with others, like using the microphone to transform sound into a monster. Yoshida believes these interactive elements help prevent VR users from feeling isolated. One of the main challenges in VR is motion sickness. Yoshida mentioned that many development teams are working on solutions, including increasing the display refresh rate to 120Hz. However, some lag may occur when using split-screen on the TV, as the VR output runs at 120fps, while the TV is limited to 30fps. Sony has implemented a semi-crack method to manage this, allowing developers to optimize performance without overloading the system. The PlayStation VR also includes dedicated image processors to enhance the output quality from the PlayStation 4, boosting the frame rate from 60 to 120 without straining the console. Similarly, VR audio is processed separately to ensure high-quality sound. Despite these improvements, developers must carefully balance performance to maintain smooth gameplay and visual quality. Not all content is equally suited for VR. For example, racing games work well in first-person view, but long RPGs or fast-paced action games might not be ideal. Developers need to tailor their games to fit the VR platform effectively. Another challenge is the difficulty of controlling VR characters, especially with analog sticks. Yoshida noted that this issue often occurs due to mismatched frame rates and movement speed. It’s a key problem that developers must address to create a seamless experience. Looking ahead, Yoshida believes VR will become an invisible part of daily life, much like smartphones and tablets today. With more devices capable of delivering VR content, the technology is expected to grow naturally and become more mainstream in the coming years.
