The latest flow battery: cooling the chip while powering

Scientists from IBM and the ETH Zurich have made a small flow battery that has the dual benefits of chip power and cooling when powered. Even considering pumping, it generates enough energy to power the chip while consuming more heat than it is. The result could be a smaller, more efficient chip, a solar cell that stores its own energy, or a device for remote monitoring that does not require an external power source.

Redox flow batteries using liquid electrolytes are typically used in large quantities to store energy. For example, Harvard researchers have recently created a solution that lasts for ten years with little degradation, making it ideal for storing solar or wind energy.

However, building a small enough chip is another matter. The team from IBM and the ETH Zurich managed to find two liquids that were suitable as electrolytes and coolants for the flow battery, which could dissipate heat from the chip in the same circuit. Dr. Julian Marschewski said: "We are the first scientists to build such a small flow battery, combining energy supply and cooling.

Using 3D printing, the team developed a wedge-shaped microchannel system that provides electrolyte to the system with very little pump power. The resulting electrode presses the liquid into the ion flowable membrane layer to produce electricity. The result is a system of 1.4 watts per square centimeter, leaving one watt left to power the battery after considering pumping. In addition, it gets rid of more heat than it, while leaving the cleanliness of the power and cooling chips.

The battery needs to generate more power than it does now, so the current idea needs to shift from research to engineering. However, the research team believes that it not only has great potential, not only chips, but also lasers that require internal cooling. Solar cells are stored directly in the battery cells, even large-flow batteries optimized with liquid cooling channels.
