Apple CEO Tim Cook has expressed his belief that AR (Augmented Reality) holds more potential than VR (Virtual Reality). With the upcoming release of iOS 11, Apple is expected to turn most of its devices into AR-enabled platforms. However, current AR experiences are mostly delivered through smartphones or tablets, rather than through fully immersive AR glasses. Cook admitted that achieving a high-quality AR experience is still a challenge at the moment, but he remains confident that when the time is right, Apple’s AR products will be the best in the market.
He emphasized that for an AR product to succeed, it must have strong processing power and a wide array of sensors. Integrating AR into the iPhone opens up incredible opportunities for developers, as they would gain access to hundreds of millions of potential users. If AR were limited to other devices, Apple could potentially lose over 15 million enthusiastic AR users—meaning the chance for commercial success would be lost.
While iPhones and iPads can already support AR technology, Cook remains skeptical about the near-term viability of AR headsets. He believes that the quality required for a compelling AR experience isn’t achievable just yet. Although Apple has filed numerous AR-related patents, Cook made it clear that consumers shouldn’t expect AR headsets to hit the market soon.
“Display technology plays a crucial role,†he said. “It needs to present content clearly and effectively to the user. That’s really challenging. We don’t aim to be the first—we just want to be the best and deliver amazing experiences. What’s available today doesn’t meet our standards, and I don’t think most people would be satisfied with it either.â€
Despite the challenges, Cook remains optimistic. “Most of the technical hurdles can be overcome. It’s just a matter of time.†His comments suggest that while Apple may not rush into the AR headset market, it's committed to delivering a superior AR experience once the technology is ready.
