UNEP announces the first international mercury pollution prevention convention

A few days ago, the United Nations Environment Program officially announced that more than 140 countries have reached an agreement on the International Convention on the Control of Mercury Pollution, the world's first international convention on mercury emissions. Global production and trade of mercury-containing products will be monitored and restricted to reduce environmental damage and human health impacts of mercury pollution.

Certain types of fluorescent lamps are included in the mercury-containing products that are banned from production and import and export by 2020. The parties will sign the convention from October this year, and 50 countries will enter into force after they are signed.

According to industry insiders, straight tube fluorescent lamps and circular fluorescent lamps such as thin tube diameters such as T5 and T8 are more likely to exceed the mercury content due to the manual mercury injection process. Relevant experts from the Ministry of Environmental Protection said that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is planning to formulate policies to strengthen the prevention and control of mercury pollution in mercury-added products and related industries. It is proposed to prohibit the production of new, rebuilt and expanded projects using liquid mercury and manual mercury injection.

The cut-off of mercury-containing energy-saving lamps and the elimination of ordinary lighting incandescent lamps issued by the National Development and Reform Commission have provided favorable conditions for the development of LED lighting. Insiders pointed out that in order to reduce the total amount of mercury used in fluorescent lamps, LED lamps should be gradually sought as an alternative light source. "In the past, the display index of LED lamps was not very good, and the price was generally higher than that of fluorescent lamps. Only through technological breakthroughs can we win. Compared with the market advantage of fluorescent lamps, LED technology and prices still need to be improved.
