The price of DRAM memory continued to decline this month, and it's expected that major South Korean semiconductor manufacturers like Samsung and SK Hynix will face challenges this year.
According to data from TrendForce’s memory storage division, DRAMeXchange, the contract price for 4GB DDR3 memory modules dropped by an average of 6.15%, while 4GB DDR4 memory saw a steeper decline of 8.82%. This trend has raised concerns about the profitability of key players in the market.
Both Samsung and SK Hynix heavily rely on DRAM sales for their revenue. In the last quarter of the previous year, Samsung held a 46.4% share of the DRAM market, and SK Hynix accounted for 27.9%, together making up nearly 74.3% of the global market. With the ongoing price drop, their profit margins are under pressure.
Additionally, South Korea has experienced a 13-month consecutive decline in exports, and falling DRAM prices are seen as one of the main contributing factors. To counter this, both companies are focusing on developing more advanced manufacturing processes. Samsung is currently rolling out its 16-nm process technology, while SK Hynix is preparing to adopt a 21-nm process. These advancements aim to reduce production costs and enhance competitiveness in the long run.
As the demand for memory chips remains volatile, the industry is closely watching how these tech giants adapt to the shifting landscape. The coming months could be critical for their strategic moves and overall performance in the global semiconductor market.
