Facebook has acquired Charles Jolley's artificial intelligence startup Ozlo. Charles Jolly, who was the head of the Facebook Android platform, will not return to the company. The Ozlo team is expected to join Facebook to address the challenges of natural language processing.
In October 2016, Ozlo launched a consumer-oriented app. Jolly said at the time that the space for dialogue AI was rapidly consolidating (Samsung just acquired Viv) and he was happy to run a service that was independent of the big tech giants. In today's acquisition, Ozlo is no longer independent, and the space for dialogue AI is more stable.
In March of this year, Ozlo launched a series of application programming interfaces (APIs). One of the key differences for the company is its knowledge map, a factual database of the world that makes any kind of artificial intelligence possible. Ozlo sold this knowledge layer as a service to developers.
According to Facebook, in addition to the intent API and the reverse API, this knowledge layer will also be closed after the acquisition. The same is true for the original, ready-to-use consumer robot.
A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement: "There are 1.2 billion people worldwide who use Messenger to stay in touch with the people and businesses they care about. We warmly welcome the Ozlo team because we use artificial intelligence and machine learning. Messenger has created a great user experience."
It is unclear how the Ozlo team will change Facebook. Ozlo's knowledge map can be found on FacebookM's backbone. A series of recent acquisitions by large technology companies is aimed at increasing the size of such information repositories. Apple recently acquired LatTIceData to help convert unstructured data into a knowledge map to provide answers to users' questions.
Facebook declined to disclose the size of its acquisition of Ozlo. The startup was previously supported by AMECloudVentures and GreylockPartners.
