Maxim announced the launch of the MAX98357 and MAX98358 digital input Class D audio power amplifiers to help designers achieve compact, efficient, plug-and-play solutions at a cost-effective price. In traditional designs, when electronic engineers use analog amplifiers, they need to cooperate with a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and add line drivers to the application processor. This will increase the overall cost of the speaker output and affect the overall solution size. As consumer voice control devices become more and more popular, consumers' requirements for sound quality are also increasing. Designers need to meet the requirements of sound effects while ensuring the simplicity of the design and low power consumption and high efficiency.

The MAX98357 Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) and MAX98358 Pulse Density Modulation (PDM) plug-and-play speaker amplifiers take full advantage of the flexibility of Maxim's pinout. Compared with a typical analog amplifier solution, the number of components is greatly reduced, thereby significantly reducing the size of the solution. Since most users control the volume digitally, these features allow users to take advantage of Maxim's cost-effective wafer-level packaging (WLP) without the need for expensive PCB VIAs. In order to achieve excellent sound quality, the device uses a digital input with high noise immunity and has a high jitter tolerance (at least 8dB better than competitive solutions). To simplify the design, the plug-and-play function only requires the user to connect one power supply, providing both the bit clock (BCLK) and the left and right channel clocks (LRCLK) for the MAX98357 and MAX98358 without the need for a master clock (MCLK). These amplifiers can automatically implement up to 35 clock configurations and 128 digital audio format configurations, further simplifying the design. Automatic configuration eliminates complex I2C programming, and customers no longer need to write basic programs to add an audio function.
