In a wind farm, there's a rule stating that once the top tower segment of a wind turbine is hoisted, the nacelle must be installed on the same day. Why is this necessary? Let’s break it down briefly.
From a fluid dynamics perspective, any non-streamlined object placed in a steady airflow generates alternating vortices that detach from its surface. These detached vortices create fluctuating pressures on the object, causing it to oscillate in both the longitudinal and lateral directions. If the structure is flexible, these fluid forces can lead to periodic vibrations, known as vortex-induced vibrations (VIV).
If the natural frequency of the tower aligns with the vortex shedding frequency, it could result in catastrophic resonance. To avoid this, several methods are employed in the wind power sector:
Firstly, spoilers can be installed on the tower. These triangular-shaped components disrupt airflow, preventing stable vortex formation. They’re often made of lightweight materials like plastic foam and are evenly spaced around the tower's upper section, anchored to the ground with strings.
Another approach involves installing dampers. These act as counterweights, using inertial forces to reduce the amplitude of tower vibrations. Proper design is crucial; an improperly configured damper might worsen vibrations instead of mitigating them.
Cable stays represent another strategy. By applying external tension, these cables alter the aerodynamics around the tower, limiting its initial sway and preventing vortex generation, thus curbing shimmy effects.
Installing the nacelle, generator, and rotor blades also plays a role. Once these components are in place, they disrupt airflow patterns, making it harder for stable vortices to form and minimizing resonance risks.
Lastly, keeping the tower door closed during lifting reduces internal airflow turbulence, enhancing damping effects within the structure and reducing vibration levels.
By following these practices, we ensure safer and more efficient operations in wind farms.
