In October 2017, Germany’s well-known third-party testing organization “Test†conducted a comprehensive evaluation of 20 television models. The brands included top names such as Metz, Loewe, Philips, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and LG. The TVs varied in size from 32 inches to 50 inches, with prices ranging between 2,000 to 10,000 yuan. The assessment covered five key areas: display quality, sound performance, operating efficiency, versatility, and energy efficiency.
The results revealed that TVs in the 40–43 inch and 48–50 inch categories performed best, offering superior viewing experiences. On the other hand, some smaller 32-inch models had noticeable issues with image clarity and sound quality, particularly with LG and Philips units.
Interestingly, higher price didn’t always mean better quality. For instance, a high-end Loewe TV priced at 16,000 euros ranked among the worst in its category. Meanwhile, more affordable options like the Samsung UE32M5650 and LG 43UJ6309 delivered excellent value for money, proving that cost-effective choices can still offer great performance.
When it came to the most critical test—display quality—the testers evaluated how well each TV performed under various conditions. They tested different input sources, including TV antennas, satellite signals, and HDMI connections. They also simulated real-life scenarios, such as fast-moving scenes, bright lighting, and varying viewing angles.
The results showed that medium and large-sized TVs generally outperformed their smaller counterparts, especially in handling fast motion without image lag or pixelation. The Samsung models UE49MU6409 and UE40MU6179 stood out for their excellent picture quality.
Sound quality was another important factor. While some small TVs, like the German Metz Cosmo 43, impressed with their audio performance, others like the LG 32LJ610V and Philips 32PFS4132 struggled. Overall, smaller TVs tended to have less immersive and more distorted sound, especially during dynamic scenes.
To enhance the audio experience, experts recommended connecting external speakers or using a soundbar, particularly if the TV is mounted on a wall. This helps improve sound quality significantly.
In terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact, the test also evaluated power consumption and flame retardant materials. Among the smaller TVs, the older Metz Cosmo 32 model performed best, while the LG 43UJ6309 and Samsung UE49MU6409 were top performers in their respective categories.
**Consumer Advice:**
1. **Bigger TVs offer a better viewing experience.**
2. **Poor built-in sound can be improved.** Consider adding a soundbar or home theater system for better audio.
3. **Newer TVs are more energy-efficient.**
4. **4K TVs may not always be worth the extra cost.** Many current content sources still use Full HD resolution.
5. **Avoid 3D for young children.** Passive 3D glasses are more comfortable than active ones, and children should avoid 3D until around age 12.
