In recent years, the demand for lithium has been increasing rapidly with the widespread use of lithium batteries. However, the global reserves of lithium are very limited and unevenly distributed, resulting in rapid increase in raw material prices, which seriously restricts the rapid development of low-cost, high-performance energy storage devices in China. Sodium has similar physical and chemical properties to lithium, and its reserves are abundant and low in cost.

Combining the combined advantages of sodium ion and dual ion batteries, Tang Yongbing research team developed a new high-performance, low-cost tin-graphite dual-ion battery based on sodium ion electrolyte. The new battery has an unexpected energy density and a long cycle life, and greatly reduces the production cost of the battery.

The results show that the new sodium ion double ion battery still maintains 94% capacity after 400 cycles of charge and discharge cycle at 2C rate; and the energy density can reach 144Wh/kg, which is higher than the energy density of the existing traditional lithium ion battery.
