The Obama administration publicly stated that before the autopilot technology officially went on the road, the government considered using the powers in its hands to evaluate and approve the autopilot technology. The states of the United States did not allow separate rules and regulations to supervise driverless cars.
The US Department of Transportation said in a comprehensive statement that automakers should participate in the assessment based on new voluntary guidelines, confirming that highly automated vehicles are ready to travel on public roads.
Automakers and technology companies are racing to actively develop driverless cars that can already be automated at some point, but these companies complain that they believe that state and federal government regulations have hampered technology development.
The guide also calls on the federal government to pay attention to ethical issues. For example, if a driverless car encounters two obstacles, the collision is inevitable and the car should hit which one. To ensure that driverless technology is used correctly, the guide believes that there are 15 factors worthy of attention, including data logging and sharing, the ability to survive when a car encounters a collision, and how to deal with it after a collision.
The US government currently allows automakers to certify their own driverless technology as long as the car meets safety standards.
Before the release of the guide, a US government official said in the introduction of the guide that they asked the states that when the driverless car was officially put into operation, it was not necessary to force the driver's seat in the car to have a driver's license.
