EU Talks on Multiple U.S. Social Media

According to a report on Reuters Beijing on March 17, an informed source said on Thursday that the European Consumer Protection Department will require US social media companies such as Facebook, Google’s Alphabet and Twitter to modify their respective terms of service within one month, otherwise There will be penalties for fines.

The person familiar with the matter said that the above-mentioned companies have put forward some solutions to the problem and held discussions with relevant EU departments on Thursday. The person familiar with the matter also stated that the meeting was constructive. The informed person was not authorized to disclose the above information and therefore requested an anonymous report.

U.S. technology companies’ operating methods have encountered many rigorous scrutiny in the European market, such as privacy issues, and how to quickly remove illegal or hate content.

The EU authorities wrote to the above-mentioned social media companies in December last year, stating that some of their terms of service violated EU consumer protection laws and urged them to take more action on intercepting website fraud information.

In the letter, the European Union stated that, for example, in some of the service clauses made by these social media companies, consumers are required to seek compensation only at the headquarters of the company’s headquarters—California—rather than in the consumer country. In addition, these media social companies also require consumers to give up some mandatory rights and so on.

Google and Facebook have not been immediately contacted for comment. The Twitter spokesperson declined to comment.

European consumer protection agencies are backed by the European Union. If they are not satisfied with the company's proposed solution, they can issue a ticket to these companies.

The European consumer protection agency also suggested that a formal communication channel should be established to send these companies notifications of illegal content and action requirements.
