Volkswagen recently revealed a groundbreaking partnership with Google, aiming to harness the power of quantum computing to revolutionize its electric vehicle (EV) battery technology and other transportation-related innovations. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in Volkswagen's long-term strategy to lead in the EV market and enhance its technological edge.
The automaker has been heavily investing in battery R&D to support its ambitious plans for expanding electric vehicle production starting next year. While current efforts have focused on scaling battery production and securing critical raw materials like cobalt, Volkswagen is also looking ahead, exploring cutting-edge solutions to push the boundaries of battery performance.
By teaming up with Google, Volkswagen aims to leverage quantum computing to tackle complex material science challenges, develop new battery chemistries, and optimize traffic systems through advanced machine learning. Although quantum computing is still in its early stages, Google has been at the forefront, offering access to its quantum processors to accelerate innovation.

The collaboration will focus on real-world applications, with experts from San Francisco’s Center for Information Technology and Munich working alongside Google researchers to develop algorithms, simulations, and optimization models. Hartmut Neven, director of Google’s Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab, expressed excitement about the partnership, calling it an honor to work with Volkswagen on the evolving automotive industry.
Looking ahead, Volkswagen’s battery experts plan to use this partnership to simulate and optimize high-performance battery structures and other materials. While lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the EV market, there is ongoing research into alternatives such as solid-state, metal-air, and graphene-based batteries—technologies that could one day replace traditional lithium-based systems.
