Google sends people to a 2018 CES venue on a special bike

CES will start soon in 2018, and 36 Days will bring us the preview of the Consumer Electronics Show yesterday. One of the new discoveries is that in the past, Google, which was active in the CES behind Android and Chrome, was very special this year. It booked a place in advance at the convention center and plans to promote its own voice assistant at the conference.

However, it does not seem to have to wait until the day of the convention and exhibition. Google has started its speech assistant and Amway for two days. It recently teamed up with Electron Wheel, a startup company that makes electric bicycle wheels, to launch an electric bicycle equipped with a Google Assistant.

It was not enough to have a car with light. They also hired a cyclist to play off-road and let him ride all the way from New York to Las Vegas, which is the venue for this year's CES. It is understood that this bike off-road trip will start from the morning of December 31. Max Lippe, a rider, will need to ride for 17 hours a day and cross the mid-west region at 0 degrees. It will arrive in 10 days as scheduled. Las Vegas.

In view of the weather close to 0 degrees in the passing area, this trip is sure to be very cold, but as a mobile ad before Google Assistant at CES, it still attracted the attention of many tech media.

Electron's second-generation wheels have been released a few months ago, and the current pre-sale price on its official website is 799 US dollars (about 5200 yuan). However, the wheel on which the Google Assistant is equipped is the company’s new product for CES. The batch of products delivered in February this year may carry a beta version of Google Assistant.

In other words, Electron's electric wheels are still pulling the wind. It promises to change the bicycle into an electric vehicle within 30 seconds. All you have to do is replace the front wheel. The wheels are powered by lithium-ion batteries and can ride 50 miles when fully charged.

Electric is just a feature of Electron wheels. How to say the wheels of the smart age will also have a little induction and a little help to ride. Therefore, Electron II wheels can be used to fasten the sensor to the pedal with a Velcro fastener, and then detect the ride force and turn on the assist mode.

For example, when you climb a hill, the wheels will turn on the assist mode and the top speed is said to have reached 20 miles per hour. Of course, cyclists can also customize the assistance level through the application in the mobile phone.

The wheel itself does not have a microphone (possibly in future versions), so if you want to use Google Assistant, you need a headset with a microphone. Say "OK Google, start bike ride" will start the wheel, and then the associated phone APP can start tracking statistics.

Google assistant installed on the handle

In addition to basic navigation, you can use Google Assistant to record trips, change wheel assistance levels, and monitor important data such as battery life.

James Parker, Electron’s vice president, told TechCrunch: “When we decided to work with Google to integrate the Google Assistant on electric wheels, we were excited because doing so would make the user’s experience as simple as possible. It also opens up the exploration of integrating speech technology into the riding process."

"There have been many similar attempts in the automotive field. We think people also have many opportunities to use voice technology while riding a bicycle."

For Google, it is not satisfied with the use of voice assistants only on smartphones and smart speakers, so it found Electron, a company dedicated to electric riding, as its potential future partner. This can be regarded as one of the most interesting application markets of intelligent voice assistants so far, and may be more meaningful than the original novelty of the whole thing.

In the end, I returned to the rider in the cold wind to participate in the exhibition. He is not alone. Because one wheel can only go 50 miles with full power, and the entire journey is 2800 miles, which means that the road must be replaced. So he also followed a team with six electric wheels.

If all goes according to plan, he should arrive in Las Vegas on January 10, the second day of CES. Interested friends can follow him on the Ride to CES website.
