IDT PCIe timing 3.3V PCIe clock generator consumes only one-fifth of the power

IDT's low-power PCI Express (PCIe) clock generator product line adds six and eight output, 3.3V clock generator products. This 3.3V clock generator complements the existing 1.5V and 1.8V product families. With a power of approximately 100mW, these new products are the lowest power 3.3V PCIe clock generators on the market today. IDT's new 3.3V devices consume only about one-fifth of the power of traditional PCIe clock devices, effectively eliminating concerns about thermal issues.

The 9FGL06 and 9FGL08 feature integrated terminations (terminaTIon), and their ultra-compact 5&TImes; 5mm and 6&TImes; 6mm packages reduce board area by 90%. The factory programmable version enables the device to be quickly optimized to meet customer specific requirements. This SoC-friendly device greatly exceeds the phase jitter requirements of the PCIe Gen3 specification and meets future PCIe Gen4 specifications, making it ideal for Gigabit Ethernet and other RMS Jitter (12K-20Mhz) applications with less than 3ps performance.

The new 3.3V device is pin compatible with IDT's highly successful 1.5V 9FGU family and 1.8V 9FGV family of PCIe clock generators. Designed for power- and space-constrained consumer products and other high-performance applications, these timing families deliver enterprise-class application performance while reducing total cost of ownership. Potential applications for these products include multifunction printers, servers, set-top boxes, and solid state drives. The entire product line is compatible with the clock specifications of PCIe Gen1, Gen2 and Gen3.

The 3.3V (L Series) series has many industry firsts, including:

• Output impedance through the output-to-output configuration allows one device to be used in a mixed-impedance environment without the need for external termination components.

• Factory-programmable version that allows the user to customize the default configuration, including output impedance, control input polarity, internal pull-up or pull-down resistors, and wake-on-LAN mode for crystal oscillators. This saves almost all external glue logic.

IDT plans to quickly introduce a 3.3V version of low-power PCIe buffers and multiplexers after the release of the new product line, which will be pin compatible with the market's successful 9DBU/V and 9DMU/V series.

The 9FGL PCIe clock generator family includes devices with 2, 4, 6, or 8 outputs. The clock generator supports the PCIe Common Clock architecture with or without spread spectrum, and the PCIe Independent Reference (IR) clock structure (no spread spectrum). These devices provide a copy of the reference clock and save a crystal in the design.

The 9-output 9FGL06xx and 8-output 9FGL08xx PCIe clock generators are available now.
