The Lyft strategy has changed significantly, increasing investment in driverless cars

Netease Technology News July 22, according to Reuters, the United States, the second largest taxi application Lyft executives said that the company has formed a driverless car sector. Currently, the fierce competition in the field of driverless cars, Lyft hopes to seize a favorable position in this competition, so made this bold investment decision.

Lyft executives said the company will soon open a plant in Palo Alto, California, which will eventually have "hundreds of" engineers.燣yft's engineers will work with other companies' unmanned experts to create unmanned systems.

Lyft chief strategy officer Raj Kapoor told reporters: "We are increasing our investment in driverless cars."

This move marks a significant change in Lyft's strategy. Previously, the company stated that it would build a driverless system for other companies while allowing partners to test their driverless cars in a taxi network in Lyft.

Lyft had previously announced cooperation with Unwired’s unmanned department, Waymo, technology company Nutonomy, and General Motors and Jaguar Land Rover. Lyft's new move may lead to direct competition with some of its partners.

The company has stated that it does not intend to build physical vehicles and this time it has not announced its own timetable for drone projects. Lyft's executives said the company will share the results of its driverless project with its partners.

According to the California Vehicle Authority, Lyft did not obtain a permit to test driverless cars in California. The company plans to work with Boston startup NuTonomy to start trial operation of driverless taxis by the end of this year.

Creating a driverless system is a complex and costly project that brings new complexity to Lyft's operations. Unlike its larger rival, Uber, Lyft's operations are strictly limited to taxi service for Americans.

In the 350 cities where Lyft operates, the company’s 700,000 drivers complete more than 200 million orders and 1.2 billion miles (about 1.9 billion kilometers) of travel miles each year. Lyft's executives said that this allows the company to learn more about traffic patterns, bridges, buildings, and other road data, which are crucial to building a driverless system.

Luc Vincent, the company’s vice president of engineering, said: “The very most critical thing is the scale of the road data we have.”

However, experts pointed out that these travel miles of Lyft are not completed by drones, which means Lyft will start from scratch in the unmanned area, and Waymo, Tesla and Uber have been operating in this area for many years.

Jeremy Carlson, an analyst at IHS Markit, a market research company, said: “Even if there are many ready-made technologies that integrate them to create a system and deploy it into a car, there is still a lot of work to do. .

Before Lyft launched the new initiative, Uber faced a lawsuit from Waymo, who accused Uber of stealing trade secrets related to the design of driverless technology.

In April of this year, Lyft raised 600 million U.S. dollars in a new round of financing. According to sources, the company has already started an IPO (initial public offering).
