Infineon Announces Acquisition of Merus Audio's Good Supplement to Infineon's Audio Processing Expertise

Infineon Technologies AG today announced the acquisition of Merus Audio. The start-up in Copenhagen, Denmark was founded in 2010 by Hans Hasselby-Andersen and Mikkel Hoyerby. Merus Audio has created energy-efficient integrated audio amplifier solutions that maximize the audio performance of smart home battery-powered speakers and extend battery life while minimizing heat and space. With the integration of Merus Audio, Infineon will be able to offer its customers a comprehensive and cutting-edge portfolio of Class D audio amplifiers to meet the needs of demanding applications. This complements Infineon's existing PowIRAudioTM product line with power below 70 watts.

Andreas Urschitz, President of Infineon's Power Management and Diversified Markets Division, said: "This move strengthens our ability to bring smart speaker fully integrated system solutions to our customers. Merus Audio's innovative audio amplifier technology is available to Infineon. A good complement to the sensor and audio processing expertise."

The fast-growing battery-powered smart speaker market will benefit in particular from this patented technology, which combines the advantages of extended play time, compact design and enhanced audio performance. For smart speaker users, sound quality is more important, and listening to music using speakers has become more popular. The Merus Audio solution is based on so-called cascade converter technology that reduces total harmonic distortion and reduces noise. According to a report released by SAR Insight*, by 2022, the annual revenue of the smart speaker market is expected to increase by 55% (2017-2022 compound annual growth rate).

According to Infineon's “from product to system” strategy, the addition of Merus Audio technology further strengthens Infineon's technical expertise in human-computer interaction (HMI). For example, Infineon is now able to achieve more accurate speech recognition, based on Infineon's sensor fusion expertise and using radar and silicon microphone technology.

Merus Audio will be fully integrated into Infineon's existing audio business as part of the Power Management and Diversified Markets division. Both companies agreed not to disclose the financial details of the transaction.
