Internet of Things vulnerabilities are frequent, and security job requirements are enhanced

It is said that in the next few years, the so-called Internet of Things will bring 25 billion or even 50 billion connected devices, and millions of security jobs, I still doubt this.

Despite this, security is the hottest topic in the IT arena, and today's data breaches, ransomware, security breaches, and the National Security Agency's extensive data collection story are endless. If users are scared by these news stories and are concerned that their personal data is at risk, mobile payment mechanisms such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet may not be able to evolve.

The demand for security professionals is increasing. As technology vendors (such as Cisco) make these certifications better reflect the current threat environment, security-related certifications are becoming more and more valuable.

Internet of Things vulnerabilities are frequent, and security job requirements are enhanced

According to Foote Partners, more than 7,000 security-related jobs were posted on Dice.com, a record high, and in the second quarter of this year, eight security-related certification fees were increased by 10%.

These jobs are worth investing in: According to Payscale data, the average salary of a security architect is $116,000.

Bigger network, bigger threats

Even though the Internet of Things is not as big as some people claim, networking devices are popping up and need to be protected. Tejas Vashi, director of product strategy and marketing at Cisco, said: "The factory was not a security threat, but it is now."

He is right. For example, Intel deploys networked sensors in its plant, processing, and production facilities, and Teradata's customers are using predictive analytics and data storage to manage suppliers and enable instant product manufacturing. As these sensors and controllers transmit data to the cloud [note], security experts suddenly face very different situations.

As networks (in a broad sense) expand into new areas, IT staff (such as network engineers) are not intimately connected to security, and now they need to learn about network security. The same is true for public engineering engineers, such as Newcastle, Australia, which is embedding networked sensors in parking lots and street lights.

It's unlikely that someone would want to invade a parking meter, but a networked device (whether at home or on the street) gives the attacker a path to attack the core of the network. These devices must be protected.

Safe and rich, with new certificates

From a personal point of view, the challenge of protecting a larger network is twofold: security professionals need to update their skills, and companies need to hire more people.

When Foote Partners released its skills and certification survey this summer, the value of safety-related certifications and the value of uncertified safety-related skills soared. For example, EC-Council's computer hacker forensic investigator certification, an increase of 66.7% over the same period last year, this is the new certification in the list of the highest salary IT certification. In 2014, conversations about popular security certifications will inevitably include CSSLP (+ WeChat Focus on the Web World), the Security Software Lifecycle Professional Certification. In the second quarter, its value increased by 17%, after a 40% increase in the previous year.

While certification has always been product-centric, it is now more work-centric, such as Cisco Industrial Networking, which is one of several new certifications created by the network giant. At the same time, Cisco is adjusting its existing certification qualifications faster than in the past.

In terms of work, Dice.com released 7251 security-related jobs, which is a 38% increase over last year. Among the categories, the fastest-growing is “cybersecurity,” with a total of 2,716 jobs, a 92% increase over the same period last year.

Here are a few examples that have been removed from these lists: United Airlines is a senior analyst in recruiting cybersecurity intelligence. Broadcasting companies are also hiring cyber security experts. Northern Trust is looking for cyber security testers.

Will the Internet of Things bring millions of new jobs to the security realm? The author is skeptical about this. But there is no doubt that security is very popular, and IT professionals with security skills can make more money and have a better development.
