ViaFauna develops animal detection systems to reduce collisions between vehicles and wildlife

According to foreign media reports, Brazilian researchers are developing a new technology to reduce collisions between vehicles and wildlife. ViaFauna founder and biologist Fernanda Delborgo Abra has an electronic animal-detection system called Passa-Bicho on the roadside.

According to her, with the help of the Sao Paulo Research Foundation, the prototype has been developed, consisting of multiple pairs of motion sensors, the transmitter and receiver. Each pair of sensors covers hot spots where accidents are high.

The transmitter will send a beam of infrared light to the receiver that is invisible to the human eye. When an animal appears, it interferes with the beam, and then the sensor sends a signal and transmits the information over the radio, which activates the electronic information panel, or in a simpler way – lights up the “animal-crossing” warning light .

ViaFauna's detection system is powered by solar panels, which target large and medium-sized animals weighing 6.6 pounds (about 3 kilograms), on the one hand because of the impact of such animals on road safety, and on the other hand Its level of exploration technology is limited.

The company plans to test its prototype at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture, which is owned by the University of São Paulo, to observe the weather tolerance of the device.
