How to use the sample-specific slicer?

Sample use slicer:

1. Adjust the thickness adjuster of the test piece to the 25mm mark and loosen the sample clamping screw to the size of 5.0×.

Place the 50mm sample into the mounting slot and tighten the sample clamping screw to compress the sample.

2. Cut off the excess sample along the surface of the cutter platform using a slicing knife. To ensure the upper portion of the sample is flat, adjust the slice thickness adjuster to 0.3 mm and trim the sample with a slicing knife.

3. Adjust the slice thickness adjuster to the desired thickness (turn clockwise for extruded samples, counterclockwise for returning to the sample placement groove). Be sure to add the blade thickness (approximately 0.15–0.2 mm). For example, when cutting 0.1 mm, rotate approximately 0.3 mm. Use a slicing knife to cut. Since the slicing edge has a certain angle relative to the wall of the slicing knife, the knife should be angled slightly with respect to the cutting platform, but not parallel (a 0.5 mm blade is about 20 degrees, and a 0.3 mm blade is about 12 degrees). When slicing, move the knife back and forth like a saw, ensuring the length of each movement exceeds the width of the sample (25 mm). The sample is usually very thin (up to 0.15 mm or less). When cutting, start from one corner and then proceed in the normal direction. For thinner samples, pay special attention to the angle of the knife to ensure the blade remains close to the platform surface—otherwise, the slice may break (especially for brittle materials) or fail to cut if the blade is too far from the platform.

Reasons that affect slice thickness:

1. Sample material: Due to the variety of materials, some are very hard and cannot be cut normally with standard slicing knives. In such cases, we recommend using the serrated knife provided by our company. However, for large-diameter or fragile samples, there may be no better solution.

2. Operator skill: Because the slices are so thin, even a small mistake during the process can cause the slice to break. Additionally, the blade's angle varies with each operation, which may result in inconsistent slice thickness. It's best to practice more to improve your technique.

Using the sample-specific slicer requires careful adjustment, proper technique, and attention to detail. Whether you're working with hard materials or delicate samples, understanding how to set up the device and control the slicing angle is essential for achieving consistent and high-quality results. With practice and experience, you'll be able to produce accurate slices efficiently and safely.
