1. Significance
Puncture resistance is a key indicator for evaluating the ability of food packaging to resist penetration by sharp objects. Once packaged, if the contents include hard and sharp elements like bones or wooden sticks, these can cause strong punctures over time. In addition, during storage and transportation, packages may be exposed to external punctures and impacts, such as the corners of other bags. If the puncture resistance is low, small holes may form on the surface that are not easily noticeable, leading to leakage or even large-scale ruptures. This is why scorpion packaging requires high puncture resistance.
Scorpion, also known as "Horn" or "Tube," is a traditional festival food of the Han nationality during the Dragon Boat Festival. It is steamed using leaves and has deep cultural roots in Chinese history, loved by many. Scorpion is usually vacuum-packed, and its sharp edges may exert puncture forces on the package. Poor puncture resistance could result in pinholes or ruptured bags, causing mold and spoilage.

2. Execution Standard
The domestic test method for the puncture resistance of soft plastic packaging is mainly based on GB/T 10004-2008, which outlines specifications for plastic composite films used in dry lamination and extrusion lamination.

4. Test Equipment

4.1 Test Principle
The sample is fixed on the fixture, and a puncture needle attached to the movable chuck pierces the sample. Force and displacement sensors record the force changes during the puncture process.
4.2 Scope of Application
(1) The device can test puncture resistance, tensile properties, tear resistance, peel strength, heat seal strength, and more for plastic films, composites, and sheets. It can also be used for infusion bag covers, rubber stoppers, oral liquid caps, tape unwinding force, bottle pressure resistance, and packaging performance tests.
(2) The device complies with international standards such as ISO 37, GB 8808, GB/T 1040 series, GB/T 4850, ASTM D882, ASTM F88, and others.
4.3 Device Parameters
- Two force sensors available: 500 N and 50 N.
- Seven test speeds: 50 mm/min, 100 mm/min, 150 mm/min, 200 mm/min, 250 mm/min, 300 mm/min, 500 mm/min.
- Ultra-long stroke of 1000 mm for large deformation materials.
- Safety features: limit protection, overload protection, automatic return, and power-down memory.
- Integrates seven independent test procedures, including stretching, peeling, and tearing.
- Lystemâ„¢ laboratory data sharing system for managing test results and reports.
5. Experimental Procedure
(1) Cut five samples of 100 mm diameter from the plastic composite film packaging of the tweezers.
(2) Clamp the sample into a special jig for puncture testing and fix it on the equipment.
(3) Set test parameters like speed and thickness.
(4) Start the test, and the machine automatically calculates and displays the results.
6. Test Results
The puncture resistance values of the samples were 11.51 N, 12.43 N, 11.09 N, 11.28 N, and 11.02 N, respectively.
