1. Significance

Puncture resistance is a key indicator for evaluating the ability of food packaging to resist penetration by sharp and hard objects. Once packaged, if the content contains sharp or hard substances such as bones, wooden sticks, or corners, these can cause strong punctures during long-term contact with the package. In addition, during storage, transportation, and distribution, packages may be exposed to external punctures and impacts, such as the sharp edges of other bags. If the puncture resistance of the bag is weak, small holes may form on the surface that are not immediately noticeable, leading to leakage or even large-scale tearing. This is why the packaging of tweezers requires high puncture resistance.

Scorpion, also known as "Horn" or "Tube," is a traditional Han Chinese festival food of the Dragon Boat Festival. It is steamed using Han nationality leaves and represents one of the most culturally significant foods in Chinese history. Scorpion is usually vacuum-packed, and its sharp edges can exert pressure on the packaging. If the puncture resistance of the package is low, it may lead to pinholes or torn bags, causing mold and spoilage of the scorpion.

2. Execution standard

The domestic test method for the puncture resistance of soft plastic packaging is mainly based on GB/T 10004-2008, which outlines the standards for plastic composite films used in packaging, dry lamination, and extrusion lamination.

4. Test equipment

Jinan Languang Electromechanical Technology Co., Ltd. has independently developed and designed the XLW (PC) intelligent electronic tensile testing machine.

4.1 Test Principle

The sample is fixed on the fixture, and a puncture needle attached to the movable chuck pierces the sample. Force value sensors and displacement sensors located on the movable chuck record the force changes during the puncture process.

4.2 Scope of Application

(1) The device can be used to test puncture resistance, tensile properties, tensile strength, elongation rate, tear resistance, peel strength, heat seal strength, and more for plastic films, composite films, sheets, and similar materials. It is suitable for infusion bag covers, soft rubber stoppers, oral liquid caps, tape unwinding force, plastic bottle anti-pressure, combination cover, jelly cups, yogurt cup covers, and other product and packaging performance tests.

(2) This device meets various international and national standards, including ISO 37, GB 8808, GB/T 1040.1–5, GB/T 4850, GB/T 12914, GB/T 17200, GB/T 16578.1, GB/T 7122, GB/T 2790–2792, GB/T 17590, ASTM E4, ASTM D882, ASTM D1938, ASTM D3330, ASTM F88, ASTM F904, JIS P8113, QB/T 2358, QB/T 1130, and others.

4.3 Device Parameters

- Two force sensor options: 500 N and 50 N.

- Seven test speeds available: 50 mm/min, 100 mm/min, 150 mm/min, 200 mm/min, 250 mm/min, 300 mm/min, and 500 mm/min.

- Ultra-long stroke of 1000 mm for large deformation rate materials.

- Safety features such as limit protection, overload protection, automatic return, and power-down memory.

- Integrated seven independent test procedures, including stretching, peeling, and tearing.

- Lystemâ„¢ Laboratory data sharing system for unified management of test results and reports.

5. Experimental Procedure

(1) Use a sampling tool to cut the plastic composite film packaging into 100 mm diameter samples, with 5 pieces per test.

(2) Clamp the sample onto a special jig for puncture testing and fix it on the testing equipment.

(3) Set test parameters such as speed and sample thickness.

(4) Click "Start Test" to begin the experiment. The device automatically calculates and displays the final results.

6. Test Results

The puncture resistance values of the tested samples were: 11.51 N, 12.43 N, 11.09 N, 11.28 N, and 11.02 N.

7. Conclusion
