Samsung obtains 64-bit ARM chip design license or develops server chip

In the afternoon of November 8th, Beijing time, according to the US IT website Computer World, Samsung has obtained ARM's first batch of 64-bit processors Cortex-A57 and Cortex-A53 design permission. Analysts said Samsung may expand from the smartphone and tablet market to the server market.

ARM's current 32-bit processor application range has not been able to break through embedded devices and mobile devices. These 64-bit processors are more efficient and faster, and will be used in servers, high-end smartphones and tablets. It is expected that the first batch of servers with 64-bit ARM processors will be available in 2014.

A Samsung spokesperson said it was inconvenient to talk about the company's future chip or server plans.

Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research, said that if Samsung decides to develop server chips, its profit margins may be higher than those for smartphones and tablets.

High-performance ARM processors are mainly used in smartphones and tablets. As companies want to cut energy costs in data centers, people are increasingly interested in ARM servers. Some people think that using ARM servers to run applications such as social networking sites and search engines is more energy efficient.

IT giants such as Facebook, Dell, HP, and Red Hat all support ARM servers. Dell and HP currently provide servers with 32-bit ARM processors for testing. Companies such as Boston and Penguin CompuTIng have begun selling ARM processors.

Analysts said that despite the hot speculation, the ARM server infrastructure is still highly lacking. The success of the ARM server also depends on software support. Many popular Linux versions will support 64-bit instruction sets in the future, so software development is progressing well.

Last week, TechCon, Oracle, Citrix and other companies also announced plans to develop software for 64-bit ARM hardware.
