Sofis, a leading British manufacturer of valve control systems, recently implemented a comprehensive valve management system for Oiltanking Malta, significantly reducing the risk of operational errors and enhancing safety. This system has helped Malta Oil Storage Company—owned by Oude Oil Storage Co., Ltd.—better manage its operational and financial risks. As one of the world’s largest independent oil storage tank operators, the company now benefits from advanced technology that ensures precise and secure valve operations.

Sofis’ innovative solution not only minimizes the potential for human error but also improves overall efficiency in oil loading processes.
During the oil loading process, specific tanks are connected to the tanker through a series of pipelines. The distributed control system (DCS) communicates with the key management system (KMS), identifying which storage tanks are involved. The KMS then releases the necessary keys to allow manual valve operation. Each time a key is used, the system records the action and retrieves the second key after the operation is complete. Once all valves are properly secured, the KMS confirms this back to the DCS, enabling the automated oil loading process to proceed safely.
Historically, misoperations or incorrect instructions during valve handling have led to serious safety concerns for workers. Recognizing these risks, Malta Oil Storage Company sought a tailored solution to improve safety and reduce potential costs. By integrating Sofis’ key management system with their existing DCS, the company has greatly minimized the chances of valve misoperation. Additionally, the new system allows operators to perform multiple valve tasks simultaneously, increasing efficiency and reducing downtime.
David Muscat, Assistant Technical Manager at Malta Oil Storage Company, emphasized the importance of proper valve sequencing: “Everyone in the oil and gas industry understands the risks associated with incorrect valve operations.†He added, “We are truly grateful to the entire Sofis team for their support. Their solution met our strict safety requirements and ensured the project was completed on time.â€
