Three months later, active users of Steam platform VR continue to retreat

Steam VR user numbers continue to decline. Recently, Valve released its "Steam Hardware and Software Survey" for November 2017, revealing that the percentage of VR users on the platform is still falling. The total number of VR users now makes up less than 0.2% of all Steam users, a concerning trend for the virtual reality industry. According to the survey, VR user numbers dropped by approximately 20% compared to October, leading to a 0.05% decrease in overall VR user share. Among the devices, HTC Vive users accounted for 0.1%, Oculus Rift users made up 0.09%, and Oculus Rift DK2 users were around 0.005%. These figures highlight the growing challenges faced by VR hardware manufacturers. Looking at Steamspy data over time, it's clear that VR activity has been on a downward spiral. In November, monthly active VR users on Steam were roughly 530,000—down by about 51% from the peak in August 2017, which saw around 1.08 million users. This sharp drop raises questions about the long-term viability of VR on the platform. Despite the initial excitement surrounding VR, it seems that many early adopters have lost interest or moved on. Factors such as high costs, limited content, and technical issues may be contributing to this decline. It’s unclear whether the trend will reverse, but for now, the numbers don’t look promising for VR on Steam. With the market still evolving, it remains to be seen whether new innovations or more affordable hardware can reignite interest in virtual reality. For now, though, the data tells a story of steady decline.
