Steam VR user base continues to shrink
Valve recently released the November 2017 "Steam Hardware and Software Survey," revealing that VR users on the Steam platform are still experiencing a decline. The percentage of VR users has dropped below 0.2%, indicating a continued downward trend in adoption.
According to the data, VR user numbers fell by approximately 20% compared to October, resulting in a 0.05% decrease in overall VR user share. Among the VR headsets, HTC Vive users made up 0.1%, Oculus Rift users accounted for 0.09%, and Oculus Rift DK2 users represented just 0.005%. These figures highlight the growing challenge of maintaining a strong VR presence on the platform.
Looking at long-term trends from Steamspy data, the number of monthly active VR users on Steam reached about 530,000 in November. This marks a significant drop from the peak in August 2017, when the number was around 1.08 million. Over the past three months, VR monthly active users have declined by roughly 51%, signaling a worrying trend for the VR ecosystem on Steam.
Despite these findings, the exact reasons behind the ongoing decline remain unclear. Some speculate that the high cost of VR hardware, limited content availability, or user fatigue could be contributing factors. Others suggest that the broader market is still in the early stages of VR adoption, and it may take time for growth to stabilize.
As the VR industry evolves, it's crucial for developers and hardware manufacturers to address these challenges and find ways to re-engage users. For now, the Steam platform's VR user numbers continue to reflect a slow but steady decline.
