The leader in BigDog bionic robots

BigDog is the leader in a series of robots developed by Boston Dynamics. It can walk, climb and carry weight on complex terrain. The BigDog is powered by a hydraulic system. It has four legs similar to animals, and a cushioning mechanism is installed on each leg. Even better, BigDog can make better use of the momentum in the movement process, making it easier to take the next step. BigDog is about the size of a big dog or a small scorpion, about 3 feet long, 2.5 feet tall, and 240 pounds.

BigDog's onboard computer controls its motion, drives four legs and handles sensor inputs. Its control system maintains balance, navigation, and adjusts its dynamics as the environment changes. Motion sensors include joint position, joint force, surface contact surface, ground load, a gyroscope, lidar and stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of the BigDog, such as monitoring hydraulics, oil temperature, engine functions, battery chargers and more.

Through testing, BigDog can travel at speeds of up to 4 miles per hour (about 6.44km/h), climb slopes up to 35 degrees, and pass through rubble, muddy trails, snow and water. Its load can reach 340 pounds (about 154kg). BigDog has set a new world record, running 12.8 miles in the middle without refueling.

The ultimate goal of BigDog's development is to reach wherever humans or animals can reach. The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Tactical Technology Laboratory invested in the development of the program.
