Using NI LabVIEW to complete wireless environmental noise monitoring in Mexico City

The Challenge:
Monitoring and recording noise levels in different parts of the central historical area of ​​Mexico City (it feels like usually using multiple points in Mexico City) allows the government to design and promulgate regulations to control or prevent these noises.
The Solution:
Develop a distributed wireless monitoring system with ten nodes (feeling uncomfortable, using "autonomous"), placed in different locations in Mexico City, measuring the noise level every 30 seconds, and sending the data back to the master every five minutes Monitoring station.

The Mexican city center has continuous traffic 24 hours a day. The heavy traffic in the morning and night rush hours has caused difficult noise problems. Current standards recommend that noise should be controlled below 68 db (A) during the day and below 65 db (A) at night. However, the noise level measurement results in most areas are between 77 db (A) and 82 db (A), which has reached an irritating level and is close to the level of hearing loss caused by excessive exposure to noise. Therefore, the government of Mexico City decided to use a cost-effective distributed system, using the Wi-Fi wireless program called the Mexico City Noise Monitoring System (SIMAR-CH), to monitor and measure the noise levels in different parts of the central historical area.
We placed many surveillance nodes near Zócalo Capitalino (the city square), surrounded by buildings with religious architectural design and the new Spanish central government. The National Palace was built as a place for public management activities during the term of the capital, and it is located to the east. To the north is the city church, which combines the Baroque style with the neo-classical style in the structure of five church halls. The Mexico City Government Office and its annexes are located to the south.
Using NI hardware and software to develop a wireless monitoring system, we chose a wireless topology based on a wired architecture because it reduces costs and provides flexibility when setting up a monitoring system. Each monitoring node is based on an industrial PC running Windows XP with a wireless adapter and no display (not sure about this) and a NI USB-9234 dynamic signal analyzer (DSA). During the hardware evaluation process, we decided to use NI products because it provides better measurement quality, ruggedness, and reliability than a lower-cost noise tester.
Each node contains a half-inch long pre-polarized IEC 61672 level 1 microphone, installed in a box containing windshields, rain protectors, and bird thorns 4 meters above the road surface. Although each node is connected to the urban power system, we use an uninterruptible power supply to prevent data loss during a power outage. The node measures the noise level every 30 seconds and transmits the data to the main monitoring station every five minutes.
We use NI LabVIEW as a remote node, the control center application and the NI Sound and Vibration Measurement Suite are compatible with international standards for sound level measurement, weighting filters, and frequency octave analysis (according to IEC 61260-Electroacoustics, Frequency Bands and Fractions Frequency octave band filter and IEC 61672-electronic acoustic, noise tester), make the measurement more accurate and repeatable.
The ease of use of LabVIEW can facilitate the development of customized user interfaces for central server operators, which is also an important consideration. We completed the entire solution in only 18 months of spare time. If we use any other programming language or tool, we estimate that we need to work full-time for up to four years. The server automatically detects, configures, and manages remote nodes. In addition, the three-dimensional system noise map display is the most impressive feature of city officials.
We originally planned to use the public wireless network installed in 2008 to reduce costs. However, because of the ID collision problem caused by the transmission of video data capacity on the public network, we must convert some nodes to the slower 3G (International Mobile Telecommunications-2000, IMT-2000) network provided by the wireless carrier. The 3G network allows simultaneous use of voice and data services, but the data rate is greatly reduced. The data rate upstream to the data center is about 5.8 Mbps, while the wireless network (801.11n) is 54 to 100 Mbps. By retaining certain channels of the noise monitoring system, we must be able to remove these slower 3G connections when expanding the system.
In addition to traditional measures for road traffic noise, such as the equivalent sound level (Leq) at different average periods and times, the system is able to record fractional octave analysis and measure prominent frequency points. If any threshold is exceeded, the system will send the sound file to the central server for research. We also provide real-time sound clips, which can easily switch between different regions, which is very helpful to find the noise source, so as to minimize the difficulty of finding potential noise problems.
Successful implementation of NI products promotes the use of NI hardware and software in a healthy "noise" environment. We have successfully developed a wireless environmental noise monitoring system for Mexico City. The Mexican government plans to use the collected data to find the time and place where the noise problem is most serious, create a noise map, discuss and enact regulations to control and prevent noise, promote a healthy "noise" environment, and make the city's noise level reach the world Quite a level in other big cities.
