In a recent evaluation conducted by the wireless signal testing organization Cellular Insights, it was found that the iPhone X equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 baseband chip consistently delivers faster LTE speeds compared to the model using the Intel XMM7480 chipset. The test involved professional equipment, including four Vivaldi antennas, to measure LTE performance under varying signal conditions. The tests began at -85dBm and progressively reduced signal strength to simulate the experience of moving away from a cell tower until the connection was completely lost.
The results revealed a clear performance gap between the two models. The Intel-based iPhone X showed significantly slower LTE download speeds, with the Qualcomm version performing approximately 67% faster on average. This difference, while notable, was smaller compared to previous models like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, where the speed gap was more pronounced.
According to Cellular Insights, this narrowing gap has raised questions about Apple’s decision-making. Some speculate that Apple may have intentionally throttled the Qualcomm baseband chip to reduce the performance difference, especially after past controversies over the performance of the Intel chip in earlier models.
One key factor is that the Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 is a gigabit-class baseband chip supporting 4x4 MIMO technology. However, Apple reportedly restricted its use in the iPhone X, which led to both versions having similar theoretical maximum download speeds of around 600 Mbps in most regions.
